The UN has passed a resolution demanding the Uk return command of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

In the non-binding vote in the Common Assembly in New York, 116 states had been in favour and only six towards, a major diplomatic blow to the British isles.

Fifty-6 states, together with France and Germany, abstained.

Mauritius states it was pressured to give up the Indian Ocean team – now a British overseas territory – in 1965 in exchange for independence.
