Pilot falls asleep mid-flight, misses airport


A pilot who fell asleep and skipped the airport by 78km experienced been awake for 24 hours, an investigation has identified.

The pilot, who was traveling from Tasmania to King Island in Australia, was encountering “acute amounts of fatigue” when he passed out through an early morning freight flight.

He was the only individual onboard the Piper PA-31-350 plane when he fell asleep in the course of the descent into King Island.

Air targeted visitors controllers and other pilots in the area tried to speak to him, to no avail.

An Australian Transport Security Board (ATSB) investigation into the incident identified that the pilot was unable to sleep a scheduled relaxation time period just before the flight.

The investigation also located that the pilot’s tiredness was at a stage that would have an affect on effectiveness – including that even if he experienced managed to sleep during his rest period, he nonetheless would have been as well worn out to fly.

“This investigation highlights the will need for pilots to assess their stage of fatigue prior to and during their flight,” mentioned ATSB executive director of transport security Nat Nagy.
