Malian jailed for breaching restrictions on travel into Ghana


An Accra Circuit Court has convicted Ofoulo Aboubacar Mohamed Jamal, a 20-yr-aged Malian for breaching limitations on travels into the state.

Jamal was arrested by Immigration Officers at the Kambaa Immigration Inland Checkpoint in the Upper West Region for coming into Ghana by an unapproved route in the course of the pendency of imposition of restrictions on travels to Ghana.

He pleaded responsible for violating the Imposition of Restriction Act, 2020 (ACT 1012) and was sentenced on his have plea by the Court presided above by Emmanuel Essandoh to a good of 2,000 penalty units (¢24,000.00) or in default serve four years in jail.

According to the prosecutor, Main Superintendent of Immigration (CSI) Philip Andoh, the conviction secured versus the Malian was good and hefty, and that, it would discourage other people from getting into the nation illegally.

“We pleaded with the court for stiffer punishment so as to deter some others in particular foreign nationals from breaching vacation limits in this period of time of new normal”, he famous.

Jamal has compensated the fine and has been handed around to the Operations Unit of the Ghana Immigration Assistance (GIS) for more action to be taken. 

The details, as introduced by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), had been that on March 30, 2020, Jamal was arrested at Kambaa Immigration Checkpoint by personnel of the Upper West Regional Immigration Command for illegally entering into the region through unapproved route during the pendency of the Imposition of Restriction on travels to Ghana

According to the prosecution, Jamal was quarantined and examined for Covid-19 at the Wa Common Healthcare facility which proved damaging.

He was subsequently referred to the Countrywide Headquarters of the GIS in Accra for investigation.

The investigation disclosed that Jamal experienced his spouse and two little ones resident in Accra, and also trades in Sugar, maize and other connected items.

The prosecution said prior to the imposition of constraints on travels to Ghana by the Federal government to enable control the unfold of the coronavirus in the place, Jamal manufactured a company vacation to Mali in the month of March this 12 months.

In his quest to enter the nation, notwithstanding the restrictions imposed on travels, he engaged the companies of a motor rider, popularly recognised as ‘Okada’ to express him from the border of Burkina Faso to Ghana’s border via an unapproved route in Hamile in the Upper West Region.

Jamal admitted to the offence just after the investigation and was billed for violating the limits imposed on travels to Ghana.
