Court bonds Rev Obofour for infringing copyright law

An Accra Circuit Courtroom has bonded Reverend Kwaku Agyei Antwi alias Rev. Obofour to be of good behaviour for 6 months for extracting aspect of Celestine Donkor’s song titled “Agbebolo”- bread of daily life, without the need of her consent.

He pleaded guilty with an explanation to infringement of copyright opposite to Sections 42(1)(a) and 43 of Copyright Act of 2005, (Act 690).

Rev. Obofour explained to the Court presided about by Madam Eva Bannerman Williams that he recognized legal responsibility as the proprietor of the numerous Tv (Television set) stations that made use of her tunes with out consulting her, adding that he had currently achieved her and paid payment.

The Court took the clarification as a plea for mitigation convicted Rev Obofour on his possess plea.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Nyamekye instructed the Court that Celestine Donkor, a Gospel musician, writer and copyright owner of “Agbebolo” is the complainant in the circumstance.

He claimed she duly registered the music with the copyright office of Ghana on October 2, 2019.

ASP Nyamekye said on December 31, 2019, Rev. Obofour extracted part of Celestine’s music and applied it in an advertisement without the need of looking for her consent.

He claimed the advert was aired on Kiss Tv set, Lion Television, Sweet Tv, Cash Tv set, all belonging to the convict, as a result, on January 9, 2020, the complainant noted to the police and Rev Obofour was invited but he did not honour it.

Immediately after law enforcement investigations he was billed and place prior to the Courtroom.
