Former Black Stars midfielder Nii Odartey Lamptey believes that the senior national crew would have beaten La Cote d’Ivoire in the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations last if Abedi Pele was offered.
Ghana was dominant for the duration of the event which was hosted in Senegal. They nevertheless fell small at the closing hurdle, getting rid of the trophy to the Ivorians 11-10 on penalties just after the sport finished – in added time.
In an interview with Pleasure FM, he confidently said that the final result would have been different if the talisman was not suspended through accrued yellow cards.
“I was dying to enjoy with Abedi Pele, he was an African footballer of the Year and was like a genius, we missed him in the 1992 AFCON ultimate and it was a significant blow to us if Abedi was element of the squad we would have overwhelmed Ivory Coast and won the trophy,” he told Nathaniel Attoh.
Lamptey manufactured 38 appearances for the Black Stars and scored eight objectives.
