Famous Ghanaian footballer Osei Kofi who was the marksman of Asante Kotoko in the late 1960s and early 1970 has narrated how the Kumasi giants missing the 1967 Africa Club Champions Cup (now CAF Champions League) grand finale towards Englebert (renamed TP Mazembe) with no kicking a ball.

Asante Kotoko were being the 2nd Ghanaian club just after Authentic Republicans to take part in the Africa inter-club competitiveness in 1966.

They had been halted by Stade Abidjan and with the working experience, they had gathered, the Kumasi giants would be unstoppable the pursuing calendar year.

Kotoko went all the way to the remaining. Led by the abled management of Wilberforce Kwadwo Mfum, with the guidance of Africa’s best participant at the time Osei Kofi Kotoko ended up excellent to go.

Osei Kofi scored essential plans as the Porcupine Warriors arrived at the final of the campaign.

Just one of Osei Kofi’s excellent display screen was Kotoko’s 5-2 win about champions Stade Abidjan to avenge the 1966 defeat. The ‘Little Maestro’ registered a hat-trick to encourage the Porcupine Warriors to a great victory in the quarter-finals.

Osei Kofi strike the back again of the web as Asante Kotoko despatched Malian outfit Djoliba packing from the opposition in the semi-finals 3-2 on mixture.

They faced Englebert now TP Mazembe who would be Asante Kotoko sworn enemies on the Africa continent in the grand finale. The Congolese held the Porcupine Warriors to a 1-1 attract and Asante Kotoko stormed Kinshaha and gave their opponents a great run for their funds as the reverse fixture ended 2-2. In present day structure, Kotoko would have been declared champions by means of the away purpose rule, but practically nothing of that existed.

It was the period when the away aim rule hadn’t been instituted, so the referee ushered the two sides into the toss of cash to split the tie.

It is documented that Asante Kotoko have been cheated in the toss of the coin since the Congolese skipper Kalala started out jubilating just before the coin could even land the grounds.

However, Osei Kofi who was an eye witness stated that the match officers connived with the Congolese to begin jubilating right before the coin lands the floor, but the interpreter hinted them and they determined not to go on with the toss of coin.

The African Soccer Confederation (now Confederation of African Football ) arranged a rematch between Englebert and Asante Kotoko, but the Porcupine Warriors were not communicated to so they failed to show up for the closing and the Congolese giants had been topped champions of Africa.

Kotoko designed various pleas but it failed to materialize.

“African Football Confederation resolved that there should really be a toss of coin. When we were getting ready then 1 of our interpreters was standing guiding the referee and the Congolese workforce officials speaking in French and he listened to the officials that when the coin is thrown up, they should not allow it tumble down right before they begin jubilating and the supporters will back them up,” Osei Kofi informed Pulse.com.gh in an distinctive job interview.

“We complained to the match commissioner that the toss of coin we won’t take it because this is what we have read and that aided us and the toss of a coin could not arrive on and what subsequent.

“We were being explained to to come back and AFC will tell us. The following match will be played in Cameroon. The date and everything will be communicated to Kotoko. This is what essentially took place. The toss of coin could not occur on.

“Sadly for us, Nana Fredua Mensah was the chairman of the Ghana Football Association. Not understanding African Football Confederation (AFC) had composed to him about the venue and the date for the closing. Kotoko have been not communicated to and later we got to know the Zairean group Englebert had absent to Cameroon and the cup has been awarded to them. We approached Nana Fredua Mensah and he did not say nearly anything and that was why Kotoko dropped the cup”.
