The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has served notices to squatters who have settled alongside the shoulders of the Odaw River from Avenor to Adabraka to vacate or encounter forceful eviction.
This is to aid the dredging of the river.
The Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, gave the purchase when he led a joint ‘Operation Covid-19 Safety’ and Sanitation Taskforce team to examine the ongoing dredging of the river.
He was accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executives of Korle Klottey and Okaikwei North, Nii Adjei Tawiah, and Nii Boye Laryea respectively with other officers from Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and Zoomlion Ghana Constrained.
Mr Adjei Sowah mentioned the ongoing two-12 months dredging of the Odaw River and the Korle Lagoon was part of attempts to prevent flooding and rid the metropolis of filth.
But, he extra that the buildings close to the financial institutions of the river experienced created it challenging for the significant-duty tools to navigate and dredge, hence, the discover for the squatters to vacate.
“This is completed each 12 months and they are fully conscious of it, so we came right here to remind them to take out the constructions within just 48 several hours to pave way for the dredging or experience forceful eviction…
“The financial institutions of the river provide as just one, a pathway for the heavy-duty gear to navigate and then as a buffer zone to accommodate runoff drinking water at any time the river overflows its financial institutions,” he defined.
The MCE observed that proper from the Avenor bridge up to the Graphic Road section of the river, people, and squatters living together with the shoulders of the channel dump all manner of stable squander into the drain.
“We are also enforcing our sanitation by-laws and the wearing of nose masks so we go round the metropolis and compel individuals to cleanse when we see any filth or concern summons,” he explained.
The Odaw River, which runs by way of the Accra metropolis, flows from the Abokobi and Adjankote hills by Ashongman, Atomic Energy location, West Legon, Achimota, Alajo, Avenor, Agbogbloshie and last but not least into the Atlantic Ocean as a result of the Korle Lagoon.
