The meeting was to rejoice the party’s profitable election of the Speaker of Parliament for the 8th Parliament.
At the celebration former president John Mahama noted that the chaos that occurred on the flooring of the House during the election of the Speaker encapsulates all that has absent incorrect with Ghana’s democracy beneath President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The shouting, shoving, pushing as perfectly as snatching of a ballot box and snatching of ballot papers, degenerated the house into a totally free-for-all arena, which compelled some soldiers to enter the lawmaking chamber in an endeavor to restore relaxed.
“I just want to place to you that every thing that is improper with our democracy beneath this President played out in Parliament that night time: snatching of ballot papers, making an attempt to disenfranchise the voters by receiving Assin North out of the chamber and all the other points that took spot – attempting to compromise the secrecy of the ballot – almost everything that performed out that evening you know, the entry of the navy into the chamber, I indicate that is an abomination, it tends to make us look like a banana republic,” Mr Mahama observed.
Congratulating the NDC MPs at a meeting for combating a very good combat in Parliament, Mr. Mahama said “this is what unity of function can do”.
Meanwhile, seven-time Nadowli Kaleo MP, Alban Bagbin of the key opposition NDC, was elected Speaker in excess of the governing New Patriotic Party’s option of Prof Mike Oquaye.
