At minimum 10 men and women have died and hundreds of other people are in hospital after ingesting out-of-day powdered orange-flavoured beverages in the northern Nigerian state of Kano, the authorities say.
The domestically made drinks are ordinarily purchased in sachets from area stores or hawkers and ready by introducing water.
In a recorded video clip information to the public, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, Kano state’s commissioner of health, stated more than 400 folks had now fallen ill after consuming expired or substandard sachets in current weeks.
About 50 people today are currently undergoing kidney dialysis, he claimed.
Patients’ symptoms have involved vomiting, diarrhoea and blood in the urine. Some have also noted experiencing dizziness.
Investigations are underneath way – and the general public have been urged to verify the dates on sachets.
No individual producer has been mentioned, even so numerous people have been arrested for providing out-of-day sachets.
The authorities are also investigating whether or not contaminated drinking water in the planning of the drinks could be an additional probable aspect.
