Thandie Newton clarifies why she dropped out of 2000’s Charlie’s Angels


Thandie Newton has discovered she dropped out of starring in the 2000 film remake of Charlie’s Angels.

The actress mentioned she took difficulty with becoming asked to play up to racial stereotypes, adding that she also felt “objectified” in the purpose.

“I just could not do it… I did not want to be set in a situation the place I was objectified,” the actress advised Vulture.

She was replaced by Lucy Liu, who starred alongside Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz in the film.

Newton reviewed her past activities of harassment and abuse in the movie market as aspect of the in depth interview.

In the interview, she said Charlie’s Angels director Joseph McGinty Nichol, regarded as McG, explained the opening shot of the movie to her, declaring: “I simply cannot wait for this. The initial shot is likely to be… You’re heading to consider it is like yellow traces down a road, and you pull back again and you realise it’s the stitching, because the denim is so limited on your ass it is going to search like tarmac.”

“I was like, ‘Oh, I really do not consider we’re likely to go down this road together’,” recalled Newton.

The actress also reported Amy Pascal, the co-chairman of the film’s producer Sony Photos, utilised black stereotypes when discussing how to make her character extra “believable”.

“She [Pascal] was like, ‘Maybe there could be a scene exactly where you are in a bar and she receives up on a table and starts off shaking her booty.’ She’s mainly reeling off these stereotypes of how to be far more convincing as a black character.”

Pascal claimed she was “horrified to hear” Newton’s opinions, adding: “While I take her words very seriously, I have no recollection of the occasions she describes, nor do any of her representatives who have been present at that casting session.”

McGinty has not commented on Newton’s remarks.

Newton stated: “This [Charlie’s Angels] is a very long time back anyway, and all people girls are brilliant. But if that was me now, I’d want to disrupt fairly than run away. I believe that is almost certainly the improve in me.”

Newton explained her time on Charlie’s Angels was one of many damaging encounters when functioning as an actress.

Newton also spoke about her time working on Mission: Extremely hard II, indicating that she was “so scared” whilst doing the job with Tom Cruise because he was a “very dominant individual”.

“He tries super-tough to be a wonderful individual. But the pressure. He can take on a great deal. And I consider he has this perception that only he can do almost everything as very best as it can be finished.”

Newton stated that for the duration of the filming of 1 scene, he suggested they rehearse by switching sites so he could demonstrate her how he preferred certain lines to be delivered, which place her in a “place of terror and insecurity”.

“He wasn’t terrible,” she extra. “It was just – he was truly pressured.”

Cruise has not commented on Newton’s remarks.
